About BTS

BTS, an acronym for Beyond The Scene (also known as 방탄소년단 or Bangtan Sonyeondan in Korean, and 防弾少年団 or Bōdan Shōnendan in Japanese, literally meaning “Bulletproof Boy Scouts”, is a K-Pop, hip-hop influenced, boy group consisting of RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, V, Jimin, and Jungkook.

The septet debuted in 2013 with “No More Dream,” which encourages their listeners to achieve their dreams. Throughout their premiere albums, Skool Luv Affair and Dark & Wild, BTS further displayed a rebellious concept and explored newfound romance. In 2015, however, they began to evolve through The Most Beautiful Moment in Life series as they further defined themselves and referenced youth-related struggles and mental health in their lyrics.

BTS are heavily involved in their music production; 90 percent of their lyrics are penned by the members and some of the members act as producers, a rare trait in the K-Pop industry.

The group also combines many different kinds of music, ranging from pop sounds like on “I Need U” and “Lost”, to Moombahton in “Blood, Sweat, and Tears,” to British rock in “Spring Day.” Lyrically, they lean heavily on the struggles and excitement of youth, but they also criticize social issues on songs like “Silver Spoon” and “Am I Wrong,” causing them to be perceived as one of the more socially conscious K-Pop artists.

The combination of their musical storytellings and aesthetic, powerful and heavily choreographed stage performances, and sneak peeks into their daily life through SNS has earned them a loyal fanbase. In 2017, they became the first ever K-Pop group to win the Billboard Music Award in the category of Top Social Artist. They went on to win this award for the second time in 2018, overtaking international superstars such as Justin Bieber and Demi Lovato, and they performed their song, “FAKE LOVE” for the first time on television.
