Streams Of R. Kelly’s Music Reportedly Rose After The ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ Premiere

It’s not the first time that controversy has boosted Kelly’s streams.

Lifetime’s Surviving R. Kelly documentary cast a stark light on the years of abuse allegations that have surrounded the controversial R&B star, but it seems the increased attention may not have turned everyone off to his music. The Blast reports that Spotify streams of Kelly’s music increased by 16 percent since the first part of the documentary aired on Thursday night. The gossip outlet cites a “rep for Spotify” in the report, and doesn’t detail which songs led the charge, but it wouldn’t be the first time that controversy has fueled streaming bumps.

Spotify announced last year that it would be be banning both Kelly and the late XXXTentacion from its company-created playlists due to the well-documented abuse allegations against both artists. In the wake of the ban, Kelly’s streams actually went up. Spotify reversed its decision soon after, and has since attempted to stay out of moral judgements about artists' music.

Billboard previously reported that Kelly averaged around 6,584,000 streams per week in 2018.
